User Reviews

I was lucky to get to go to an advance showing of this movie tonight. Boy, was I surprised in what I got to see! Odd Life of Timothy Green is a rare gem out there for a clever storyline that can be funny, sad, and uplifting at the same time.

Without giving too much away, Jennifer Garner and Joel Edgerton play a couple who have tried to have a child unsucessfully until one night, a son appears....from the garden?!? The storyline is both magical and grounded in reality where we follow Timothy Green learn about others and life. This includes bullying, love, competition, and yes, even death. I found it to be a bit of a mix between two other old live action Disney movies: Polyanna and Mary Poppins.

The acting in this movie is superb, especially CJ Adams as the main character and Dianne Weist as the grumpy old lady everybody knows. Both of these actors were able to play their characters multi dimensional and I really got a laugh out of Weist's dour expression for most of the movie. The movie rounds out nicely with M. Emmet Walsh, David Morse, and (what?) Common.

The only gripe I had with the movie was I felt that it was a bit slow moving and could have been about a 30 minutes shorter, but it still was one of Disney's bests and one of the best movies I have seen this year.

cosmopolis Riding across Manhattan in a stretch limo in order to get a haircut, a 28-year-old billionaire asset manager's day devolves into an odyssey with a cast of characters that start to tear his world apart.

Synopsis

28-year-old financial wizard and billionaire Eric Packer traverses Manhattan in his stretch limo. His goal: a haircut at Anthony's, his father's old barber. But on this day his driver has to navigate a presidential visit, an attack by anarchists and a rapper's funeral. Stuck in traffic, he anxiously monitors the value of the yen on the limo's computer.

Storyline

Riding across Manhattan in a stretch limo in order to get a haircut, a 28-year-old billionaire asset manager's day devolves into an odyssey with a cast of characters that start to tear his world apart.
'Cosmopolis', which I haven't read, is apparently a re-imaging of 'Ulysses' predicated on its main character, Eric Packer's, desire to travel by limo across New York City for a haircut, at the same time as his vast fortune, bet against the Chinese Yuan, contrary to all incredibly painstakingly detailed forecasts (the fallout of the pains taken is a plot point), free-falls. Packer's cross town limo ride is made an odyssey as the President is also in New York to make a speech, his presence received not only with death threats and the attendant red-alert security, diversions and traffic hell, but also a carnival of protesting anarchists who despise Eric Packer, and stretch limo riders generally, together with all they stand for. His own security detail picks up on a "credible threat" on his life. En route, Packer entertains various employees, early on hearing updates on how his stock is doing but never appearing greatly concerned either way, preferring to engage in mannered, alien-sounding conversations which amount, essentially, to small talk and in-house gossip, some bragging, commiseration over the death of his favourite rapper, and at one point a kind of lesson in techno-capitalism delivered by his Head of Theory (there's also a prostate examinatioCosmopolisn and some shagging thrown in there).

Cosmopolis

Rarely straying far from his limo or staying away long, COSMOPOLIS is decidedly a chamber piece. In spite of its New York setting I believe it was made entirely in Canada, possibly entirely on studio sets, or close enough. If you thought A DANGEROUS METHOD was insipid or too dialogue driven (I thought it was great), wait till you get a load of COSMOPOLIS! It opens on a close-up of a kerb-side limousine's grill, tracks right and glides along for two or three car lengths, rounds a trunk and approaches Packer – Robert Pattinson in a Gucci suit and black sunglasses – and his Head of Security loitering on the broad steps of a Wall Street building. He announces his intention of getting a haircut and it soon cuts to the interior of his limo, the body of which, he later reveals, he had lined with cork insulation against noise. He says it doesn't work but a striking stillness nevertheless does descend upon the film here, in only the second minute, leaving one with a sneaking sense that this will not be the violent, kinetic romp that's being sold in that thirty second teaser. It's a good thing one is given the opportunity to adjust one's expectations so soon because COSMOPOLIS is, in fact, so confined and sterile that Cronenberg's other films from the last ten years - all of them quite intimate in scale and no longer than a hundred minutes – start to assume, by contrast, a kind of grandeur. Howard Shore's score, for example, performed by the band Metric, seems to be channelling Moby at his least expressive. (The song that plays over the end credits is good though.)

Cosmopolis

How much you will take away from COSMOPOLIS, therefore, depends to a great extent on how compelling you find the De Lillian post-modernism emporium. Packer's driver and security team's attempts to plot a route across the chaotic city are paralleled with his number crunchers' efforts to decipher the patterns which reveal the incisive moves to make in the currency markets are paralleled with Joyce and the awesome detail that makes up the life of a single day which point to the infinite complexity of destiny in the modern world except that Masters of the Universe like Eric Packer conspire to hold a compulsory purchase order on everybody's future; the Cronenbergian flesh is here the flesh of capital and it subsumes everything and resistance is futile not to mention insincere and unoriginal. Monks set themselves on fire in Vietnam, like, over forty years ago. Think outside the box, people. Bo-ring! Millions of Arabs across Africa and the Middle East of course defy Packer's bland assertion that such a protest is immediately forgotten nowadays, but then again, what would he know anyway? Ultimately this guy-in-a-limo movie is exactly what it appears to be at face value: an out-of-touch-rich-guy movie. In its defence, it's more fun than MARGIN CALL. Ahem.

Action, drama; forget about it, but there's plenty of theory to go around. On the plus side, Packer's concluding back and forth with Paul Giammati's character (who gives a number of different names) is good Рfinally less blas̩ and uninflected than the other set pieces Рand somehow I left theatre with a more positive than negative overall impression of the film. Cronenberg has changed course once again following his hugely successful foray into more mainstream drama/character studies in his last three films which all share the same final shot. Personally, I liked where he was at before and rank this as a categorically weaker effort, though it's still far from being an outright bad film.

Ice Age: Continental Drift

Ice Age: Continental Drift   :      In this movie, Surat the squirrel is the cause for the continental drift, splitting the earth's land masses into the five continents America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia. This suggests that the the beginning of the movie as well as the three previous "Ice Age" movies took place on the continent Pangaea which existed 300 million years ago and started to split apart 200 million years ago. The ice age however occurred approximately 20,000 years ago, a time in which the five continents already existed.

Ice Age: Continental Drift

Synopsis:

Ice Age Continental Drift : Join Manny, Diego, Sid, and Surat this summer as they brave the high seas & battle a ragtag group of pirates determined to stop them from getting home.

Manny, Diego, and Sid embark upon another adventure after their continent is set adrift. Using an iceberg as a ship, they encounter sea creatures and battle pirates as they explore a new world.

Storyline

Ice Age: Continental Drift: Sc rat's  nutty pursuit of the cursed acorn, which he's been after since the dawn of time, has world-changing consequences - a continental cataclysm that triggers the greatest adventure of all for Manny, Diego and Sid. In the wake of these upheavals, Sid reunites with his cantankerous Granny, and the herd encounters a ragtag menagerie of seafaring pirates determined to stop them from returning home.

it was fun, but not the best of the series

Ice Age: Continental Drift Ice Age: Continental Drift is funny, and i had fun watching it and looked forward to seeing what this weird herd is up to now.

It is the fourth installment of the Ice Age series and the seventh CG production of Blue Sky Studios and the first sequel not to be directed by Carlos Saldanha who will be directing RIO part 2.

What I love must about this flick is the introduction of a partner for Diego; a white tiger lady is added ladies and gentlemen. The movie also has the whole fun of the old clichés, which I seem not to be tired of seeing. It also showcases cool CG effect; I loved the water effect most.

The plot was educational (as long as you know it is bogus) due to Scrat's (Squirrel) hunt for acorns he triggers the break-up of the world continent into the continents as we know them today, which cause Manny to lose his family.

Manny, Diego, and Sid embark upon another adventure to find his family, after their continent is set adrift. Using an iceberg as a ship, they encounter sea creatures and battle pirates as they explore a new world, and learn why it is good to be part of a family herd, than being part of a group where one person leads and other follow.

Well, the new directors weren't that bad, as the movie did have some fun screenplays and events that you will be thrilled to see. As we watch this creatures move from the Ice Age to the present age the pictures tell stories that are kinda informative and entertaining.

Hey! I must have missed that geography class when they taught that Scrat the squirrel created the whole world.

Although this is not the best addition to the Ice Age series it was fun to watch. And the movie kinda opens doors to new additional sequels.

But I hope Blue Sky won't bother making any more.

Falling Overnight

The delicate subject matter of this film is beautifully rendered by writer/director Conrad Jackson. The serious theme is there but the overall tone is one of hope, and the beauty of life wins out over its unpredictability.

Jackson's cinematography enables us to feel the passage of time differently, and he takes us on a journey through a young man's (potentially) last night with simple events that exemplify how precious life is.

The two main actors are endearingly naive, but with depth and complexity beyond their years. Oh yeah, and apparently it was filmed in 14 days - impressive!

Marketing

The Neighborhood Watch marketing campaign began on February 29, 2012, with the release of a teaser poster, trailer and the unveiling of the film's website, jointhewatch.com.[39] On March 27, 2012, it was reported that 20th Century Fox had the poster and trailer removed from Florida theaters in response to the increasing controversy concerning the shooting death of Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida by neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman. The trailer featured Hill, imitating a gun with his hand to pretend to shoot at teenagers, while the poster featured a bullet-ridden, alien-themed neighborhood watch sign. According to insiders, Fox intended to move into the next phase of the marketing campaign as soon as possible, focusing on the film's science-fiction aspect, while replacing the previous posters with images of the cast.[40][41] Fox maintained that the July 27, 2012, release date would remain unchanged by the Martin case or the marketing changes.[42]
In a statement about the changes, Fox said: "We are very sensitive to the Trayvon Martin case, but our film is a broad alien-invasion comedy and bears absolutely no relation to the tragic events in Florida… these initial marketing materials were released before this incident ever came to light. The teaser materials were part of an early phase of our marketing and were never planned for long-term use."[40] The new alien-focused campaign began on May 4, 2012, with the release of a new trailer, coinciding with Fox changing the film's name to The Watch, to further distance the film from the Martin case.[26][1]

Synopsis

Trishna lives with her family in a village in Rajasthan, India's largest state. As the eldest daughter, she works in a nearby resort to help pay the bills. Jay is the wealthy son of a property developer. When he takes up managing a resort at his father's request, he meets Trishna at a dance and their fates cross. Jay finds every opportunity to win Trishna's affection and she accepts his efforts with shy curiosity. But when the two move to Mumbai and become a couple, Jay's deep family bond threatens the young lovers' bliss.

Trishna

Storyline

Based on Thomas Hardy's classic novel Tess of the D'Urbervilles, 'Trishna' tells the story of one woman whose life is destroyed by a combination of love and circumstances. Set in contemporary Rajasthan, Trishna (Freida Pinto) meets a wealthy young British businessman Jay Singh (Riz Ahmed) who has come to India to work in his father's hotel business. After an accident destroys her father's Jeep, Trishna goes to work for Jay, and they fall in love. But despite their feelings for each other, they cannot escape the conflicting pressures of a rural society which is changing rapidly through industrialisation, urbanisation and, above all, education. Trishna's tragedy is that she is torn between the traditions of her family life and the dreams and ambitions that her education has given her.

A disappointment

There have been many modernisations of classic novels and plays, from Alfonso Cuaron's Great Expectations and Baz Luhrman's version of Romeo + Juliet. Now Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles have been given a modern version thanks to Michael Winterbottom.

In Rajasthan Trishnais a young woman in rural Rajasthan who lives with her large family and meets a British traveller, Jay Singh (Riz Ahmed). When her father is badly injured and the family indebted, Jay offers Freida the her a job at his father's hotel in Jaipur. Soon Jay offers Freida the chance of an education, advancement and financial support for her family. But as they grow closer they start a on-off relationship and are continually drawn to each other.

Setting the updated version of Tess of the D'Urbervilles, it would not have worked in Modern Britain and India does have issues involving rural poverty, a massive class divide, splits between rich and poor and traditional social values in that nation. But I found Trishna to be a rather dull affair. It was boring from a story perspective, that it wanted to try and cram too much of the novel into the film, resulting with numerous montages showing the passing of time instead of showing events in detail. The visuals and the performances are bland, the cinematography and art direction neither has any real grit or realism nor a bright colourful visual. There are some good moments like a tender moment when Jay and Trishna are in bed and she reveals a secret and when the relationship when it gets darker. But at the same time I did not quite buy the relationship between the two, either as it was forbidden or that Ray is Trishna because for the most part it seem like Ray was good for her. Ahmed is a decent actor but I did not buy there was a darkness in his character early on. I put it more down to writing and direction then Ahmed himself. Pinto was okay but she has been better. She has let to find the right vehicle since Slumdog Millionaire.

Winterbottom's direction had a weird paradox, because of the need to cram so much that the film felt rushed but other times the film felt like it was dragging and stalling. The editing and pace was all over the place and there was no coincidence. He is much better then this.

Amit Trivedi and Shigeru Umebayashi did provide a very pretty soundtrack and score, helping provide for the Indian feel the film was going for.

Sadly Trishna was a disappointment and this is certainly not a repeat of Slumdog Millionaire.

User Reviews.

The thing that I enjoy most about Wes Anderson films is that they each feel like a great adventure and in this sense I think Moonrise Kingdom is his best yet. It tells that tale of Sam, an orphan on scout camp, and Suzy, a misunderstood girl, as they run away together. At first I found the two actors playing the kids to be kind of limp but after a few minutes I warmed to them and I actually think they were both pretty good overall, particularly JaredGilman who plays Sam and even more so knowing that it's the first acting he's ever done. The rest of the cast are all pursuing or helping them in some way and there a couple of sub-plots with the island's policeman  and the parents of Suzy .

I thought that the rest of the cast was great. In fairness I am a bit biased because I love Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Bruce Willis and Frances McDormand but even so I have to say that they were all really good, especially Edward Norton who plays the scout master, and Bill Murray. There are also a couple of minor roles for Jason Schwartzman HarveyKeital and Tilda Swinton who were also a lot of fun. Everyone in the cast fits into their role really well which is obviously exactly what you want, but not only is that the case for the main roles but also for the less important ones, like the scout troupe Suzy's three brothers or the oddball narrator.

Cinematography wise I didn't think this movie was particularly spectacular, especially in comparison to other Wes Anderson movies like 'The Life Aquatic' or 'The Royal Tenenbaums. There were a couple of shots that were cool though, some really long zoom outs  and the doll house type ones that I love and think are awesome.

I wouldn't expect to wet your pants laughing at any moment in 'Moonrise Kingdom' but it is funny. There are a couple of laugh out loud moments and as a whole the jokes are pretty sharp and intelligently done. The reason I like the humour in this movie is that it's a part of the ambiance and feel of it, it won't make you crack up but it will make you have a smile on your face for pretty much the whole thing and leave you feeling strangely happy.

That kind of ambiance is really why the movie is so good, and is possibly Wes Anderson's best movie. The whole story is this fantastic blend of reality and child-like dreaming and it's wonderful. At times I felt kind of nostalgic and sad that I'm not a kid anymore. On the other hand it feels like a tribute to those myths and dreams of being a child and it works so well. This is the kind of film that I feel I could watch over and over again, each time spotting something new but also feeling good and enjoying the overall purpose.

The film opened in only four theaters, two in New York and two in Los Angeles, but earned $167,250 per screen, the all-time record for highest per-theater box office average of a non-animated film.

Set in the world of male strippers, Mike takes a young dancer called The Kid under his wing and schools him in the fine arts of partying, picking up women, and making easy money.

                             Magic Mike

The Warner Bros. male stripper pic's midnight tally, which will be added to Friday's grosses, signals an expected frontloaded start for the film, as mostly female fans of Channing Tatum and company boost opening day sales. Saturday typically is occupied by couples, a major driver for one of the weekend's other wide released "Ted."
There are no direct comparisons for "Magic Mike" -- and few that are indirect.
Warner's "Sex and the City" similarly drew a sizable girls-night-out crowd, though that pic benefited from pre-awareness from the HBO show. The same could be said for its sequel, which rang up $3 million from midnights during Memorial Day weekend 2010.

So much of this movie could have been easily fixed..
Don't get me wrong. It's gorgeous to look at, and I'm definitely going to go and see it again. It's really impressive.

But... It's stuffed with scenes without any payoff. Again and again it sets stuff up and then just... walks away from it.

In at least one unforgivably stupid scene, someone *literally* just walks away from an antagonist and leaves it there. And then doesn't tell anyone about it. Some of it's really effective. There are some scenes that are absolutely gripping. But so much of it doesn't make any sense...

Having said all that I think it's very clear that what I just saw was Prometheus part 1. It's very definitely supposed to have a sequel and I will certainly go to see the sequel. I think both movies taken together might score a 10.

But this movie by itself doesn't.

Storyline

In an effort to tap into his original talent, a wheelchair-bound author moves to a rural town, where he befriends a single mother and her three kids, who help reignite his passion for writing.
The children are wonderfully cast and fabulous in their given roles, as is Virginia Madsen as their mother.

Yes, Morgan Freeman is a genius actor and plays the part well, but the romantic undertone is a little creepy. He is twenty-five years older than Virgina Madsen, who is exceptionally attractive for a fifty-year-old woman, but they do not fit romantically and his character comes off a little pervy for his subtle lusting after her. If the genders were reversed, it would be a total turn-off for the viewer. The continuation of the much older man/younger woman scenario (think "The Bridges of Madison County") is dated and unrealistic.

The setting is beautiful and the storyline sentimental, so, overall, it is a solid summer film.

I was lucky to see this movie twice during the Sundance Film Festival, once early in festival when it was all the buzz, and a second time after it won ***two*** of the highest awards out of 100+ films at Sundance, Grand Jury, and Best Cinematography.

This movie is brilliant and the movie out of all of Sundance 2012 that everyone needs to see. Sundance is famous for The Big Lebowski and Reservoir Dogs and dozens of other awesome movies. This movie is equally as good as Slumdog Millionaire if not better, particularly because it has a distinct, wonderful American and American Roots approach and story. This is the America long forgotten, but still completely there.

It is vivid and accurate and filmed and based off all real people in real places in real situations. It feels so accurate but almost like edge-of-your seat documentary in a foreign country, but it's deep and in the bayou in Louisiana. I mention it feels like a documentary because it feels so real and so accurate (and this is why it won the cinematography award). The movie instantly brings you into this world and the world of the main characters and you are 100% committed.

The main actor is arguably the best and most vivid 7 year old actor I have seen (she is on par with Leonard DiCaprio in Gilbert Grape, but even younger). The performance should be (and there is a chance it may be considered as) Oscar winning. The character of her father is also a truly amazing performance as well. Also potentially Oscar winning -- it is that good. If this movie catches in the theater, I would not be a bit surprised to see either actor on the stage at the Oscars and I say that with 100% seriousness.

Because it's told from her perspective and how she sees the world, there is a little bit of mischief and a the movie brings you right into the confusion and little but of fantasy of how a 7 year old experiences the world. It has the feeling of Where the Wild Things Are, in a lot of ways (the book as well as some aspects of the movie including the parts where things are scary). Rather than getting lost or confused from her perspective, she brings you right in, and you fall in love with her. I would be surprised if this actress does not become a major force in acting over the next several years.

I hope this review helps and all I can say is take your time to try to seek out this movie. If for some reason it never makes it to the big screen, it will be one of the biggest losses of one of the best movies to come out of Sundance that every American should see but the didn't, due to the nature of the industry.
